GEOLOGICAL MAP OF THE PYRENEES
Map published together with the Geological Map of the Quaternary of the Pyrenees (click here to see)
The first published map that covers the entirety of the Pyrenean system, this map the result of a close cooperation between the French (BRGM) and Spanish geological (IGME) surveys. A background image of the shading of the topographic base generated from a digital elevation model (DEM), and a simplified road network enhance the geological data and makes easier the geographical location. Three insets complete the geological map: a structural scheme of the whole chain, a gravimetric map (Bouguer anomaly) and a cross section of the lithospere in the Central Pyrenees (ECORS project), which gives an idea of the convergence that led to the collision of the Iberia and Europe plates.
This map was based on the draft at the scale of 1:500 000 complied by Yves Ternet for the 1993 edition of the Geological Map of France at the scale of 1:1 000 000, supplemented by Thierry Baudin (BRGM) and Bernard Laumonier (Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Nancy) for the French side, and the work of Antonio Barnolas, Inme Gil Peña, Santiago Martin-Alfageme (IGME), for the Spanish side.
